Bobby Darin (born Walden Robert Cassotto, May 14, 1936 – December 20, 1973) was an American singer and musician. Darin performed widely in a range of music genres, including pop, jazz, folk and country. Although unknown to his public, his health was dangerously fragile and strongly motivated him to succeed within the limited lifetime he feared he would, and ultimately did, have. He was also an actor, singer/songwriter and music business entrepreneur. His wish for a legacy was quot;to be remembered as a human being and as a great performer.quot; Among his many other contributions, he became a goodwill ambassor for the American Heart Association.
In his time, Bobby Darin was thought a bit of a loudmouth; the guy who announced he was going to be a star at 22, a legend at 25 and an institution at 30. “Let me know when you stop being a legend,” said Sammy Davis Jnr, “so we can start being friends again.” Darin was unfazed. “Conceit is thinking you're great; egotism is knowing it,” he said.
He was great, as it turned out, a huge talent whose career, however, appeared hampered by artistic restlessness and social conscience. His evolution , from Fabian,style white rock ‘n’ roller (Splish Splash, Dream Lover) to swaggering, Sinatra,style swinger (Mack The Knife, You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby) to Hollywood actor (oscar,nominated for 1963’s Captain Newman, M.D.) to Tim Hardin,style folk,rocker (If I Were A Carpenter) and back again to Vegas,style entertainment incorporating all aspects of his gifts , confused a public used to their entertainers doing one style of thing forever. His early death in 1973 from heart failure aged 37 left a feeling of promise unfulfilled, though from this distance, his impatient spirit and creative range looks rather less like underachievement and more like the legacy of rock ‘n’ roll’s first genuine renaissance man.
